Afcons Infrastructure received a 1,918 crore rupee letter of acceptance from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation for the desalinated water conveyance tunnel from Manori to Charkop and on to Mahavir Nagar in Kandivali, inclusive of GST and operations and maintenance.
The tunnel runs 7.175 km at 2.5 metres diameter, bored 104 to 128 metres underground by two tunnel boring machines, with shafts at Manori, Charkop and Mahavir Nagar. It carries output from the proposed 200 MLD Manori desalination plant into the western suburbs network, and both tunnel and pumping station are sized for 400 MLD even though phase one equips the mechanical and electrical systems for 200. BMC had proposed a 2,241 crore rupee contract when Afcons emerged lowest bidder, so the award has landed roughly 14 percent below that figure. Afcons is already executing the Kasheli to Mulund water tunnel for the same client, which is the more useful read: BMC's water programme is turning into a repeat channel rather than a one-off win.
